The Yerba Mate plant (Ilex paraguariensis) is a different specie from the tea plant (Camilia Sinensis). Here's why:
While Camelia Sinensis mainly grows in Asia, Yerba Mate exclusively grows in South America. Both plants contain Caffeine, but unlike the tea plant, Yerba Mate contain an alkaloid called Theobromine (also found in cacao). Theobromine is a lot different from caffeine because it offers more relaxed and longer energy without the spike and crash.
We often hear that the Yerba Mate plant is known to have the energizing qualities of coffee, the health benefits of green tea and the euphoria of chocolate.
Yerba Mate is also the only infusion to be consumed with a gourd and bombilla (metal filtering straw). Here's 5 reasons to brew yerba mate the traditional way with a gourd and bombilla.
Mateina Yerba Mate Drinks are a much better option than energy drinks. The only source of stimulant in Yerba Mate is the naturally occurring caffeine and theobromine coming from an infusion of the dried leaves.
Yerba Mate will keep you focus and energized for hours without the jitters, crash and anxious feeling that you may feel when you consume energy drinks.
An energy drink is just a base of sparkling water in which several active ingredients (synthetic caffeine, vitamins, taurine, A LOT of processed sugar or fake sugar etc) are added.
Mateina is a simple tea infusion made from brewed leaves!
It's also:
Made with 4x less sugar than an energy drink (organic cane sugars only)
Made with simple, natural & organic ingredients only.
Rich in naturally occurring caffeine (from yerba mate leaves). This assures the gentle, balanced energy we all love.
Lighter! A lot lighter than traditionnal energy drink, just like a delicious, refreshing homemade iced tea (perfectly sweetened).
If it's not enough to convince you, here are 3 good reasons to swap your usual energy drink for yerba mate!
If we look at the nutritional profile, Yerba Mate is healthier than Coffee.
While being less acidic, Yerba Mate has a much larger amount of Polyphenols than coffee.
Yerba Mate also contains an alkaloid called Theobromine, well known to offer a more relaxed and longer energy without the spike and crash.
It also contains minerals such as vitamin A, vitamin B1, B2, B3, and B5; vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sodium, sulfur, and zinc.
If you are looking for a healthier alternative, yerba mate tea is definitely a great option!
Yerba Mate Tea is best enjoyed in the morning or in the afternoon between 1 and 4 pm to stay highly focused and to avoid the afternoon crash.
For people that are sensitive to Caffeine, it's better to avoid drinking Yerba Mate 6 hours before going to sleep.
For a better workout, drink Yerba Mate 30 to 60 minutes before your session!
Our ready-to-drink sparkling line is lighter in caffeine with 80 mg per can (355 ml). A regular espresso shot is said to contain about 40 mg of caffeine, so our sparkling infusions are roughly equivalent to a double espresso. This product line is mainly composed (for the moment) of the Mango Ley Lime, which is at the top of the list. An energy infusion much appreciated for its bubbles, it's light and slighty sweet taste. Other sparkling flavors are on the way, stay tuned!
Our non-sparkling ready-to-drink beverages naturally have a higher caffeine concentration. It contains 130 mg of caffeine per can, all from organic Yerba Mate leaves. We currently offer 5 flavours of non-sparkling ready-to-drink; Original Lemon (our classic), Peach-Passion, Blueberry-Haskap, Grapefruit-Guava and Hibiscus-Berries.

Our Yerba Mate is cultivated with respect for the native forests. The chosen method allows a natural and sustainable cohabitation between the different botanical species.
Most of the world's Yerba Mate is processed using a heavily smoked drying system that uses burnt wood to dry the mate leaves. This drying method is known to produce a Yerba Mate that contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chemicals that have been shown to be carcinogenic if consumed in high concentrations.
Our Yerba Mate is 100% air dried through a process that use warm air instead of smoke. That drying system enable the leaves to be free of PAHs. This creates a safe, healthy and light tasting yerba mate.
Here's why it's very important to avoid smoked Yerba Mate Tea.
We believe that Yerba Mate with stems is better than pure leaf. In most Yerba Mate tea blends, the stems are left in it because they act as a natural sweetener that naturally balances the bitterness present in the Yerba Mate leaves.
Moreover, it’s in this part (the stems) of the plant that the concentration of theobromine (a stimulant with relaxing effects) is present in higher percentage.

When you infuse Yerba Mate with a french press or tea infuser, you can infuse it 2 or 3 times just as any regular tea.
